The Best Exercise for the Elderly

Honestly, the best exercise anyone can choose to invest their time in is the one that they will do! I’ve heard it said that the person that loves to walk goes further than the person who loves the destination. I quit smoking when I was in my 40’s and immediately thought, “Great! Now I can be that runner I always wanted to be.” I started running, and forced myself to log mile after miserable mile. As much as I wanted to be a graceful, fast runner, the truth of the matter was that I was relatively slow compared to what I wanted to be, and most certainly not graceful. The ONLY aspect of running I found enjoyable was the endorphin high towards the end of the run. If you try something and it doesn’t make your soul sing, move along to something else; there are hundreds of activities to sample: running, swimming, yoga, cross fit, spinning, weightlifting….

At this stage of my life I’m really enjoying weightlifting. Most of my life I’ve been a skinny dude, so I started lifting more out of vanity than anything else. After my body began to change, my opinion of myself changed as well. Now, although I enjoy looking fit, I have found that my morning workout has become an integral part of setting up my day for success; it completely alters my outlook on the day’s possibilities. But that’s a topic for another post that will probably be filed under “Philosophy.”

Find an exercise that makes you glad to get up in the morning.
