Two things that changed my life

While there have been many events that altered the trajectory of my life, there are two “habits” that have significantly improved the quality of my life.

The first has the been the adoption of a meditation practice. I started meditating several years ago, and was only able to sit for a few minutes at a time; my mind wasn’t calm enough to keep it still for longer than that. As I stuck with it, the time slowly increased, and the benefits started becoming apparent. When the mind is calm and clear, and I am just observing it, I become aware of my automatic reactions to almost everything and, as just an observer, I can decided if that is the response I really want to have to whatever it is causing the reaction.

The second “habit” that really changed my life, is working out in the morning. As I have previously mentioned, I was working out on weekend afternoons, and, truth be known, was primarily doing it as a vanity thing. I wanted to look good, despite age taking its toll.

It quickly became apparent that I could not hit all my body parts in two days per week, so I resolved to start getting up early one morning during the work week and squeezing in a third workout. I was totally dreading it, but decided it was the only way. I was a little disoriented the first couple of days, but I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I was finally going to be able to hit all body parts every week. Within the first week I noticed other benefits however. I was no longer charging into work, already filled with panic regarding the day, but rather walking in full of calm confidence that whatever the day had in store for me that I would handle it. My employees also started telling me I was in a much better mood on days that I hit the gym prior to coming into work.

Physical activity in the morning before work helps put my day into proper perspective. I’m much more effective and efficient at work, and, despite very long hours, do not feel as emotionally drained at the end of it. Now I enjoy my days off, spending my time resting or pursuing other interests, while getting my workout in every morning before work during the work week. Give it a try; it might just work for you too.
